EN Summary

EDSANO was probably one of the most ambitious projects in the last 10 years developed by Youth for Youth. Reasons for this statement are:

  • Updating the national curricula for health education is a project on its own. The HE national curricula are modular, on groups of two grades corresponding to the level of child development (1st – 2nd, 3rd – 4th and so on until 11th – 12th). As a previous identified need, we also developed the pre-school HE curriculum, to support also educators in working with 4-6 years old children in kindergartens. All previous themes (1. Basic knowledge on anatomy and physiology; 2. Hygiene; 3. Physical activity and rest; 4. Environment; 5. Mental Health; 6. Nutrition; 7. Reproductive and family health; 8. Use and abuse of drugs; 9. Accidents, violence, abuse and humanitarian values) were revised and developed according to the latest research and available data, all of them in multi and inter-disciplinary teams. Development and consultation process included technical experts, decision makers, NGO representatives (national and international), as the Health Education National Programme is one that may directly affect the life of huge populations and generations of Romanian children and young people and also communities, reaching the whole country. Nevertheless, even if at the time of developing the curricula also the Ministry of Education was in the process of reforming its own methodologies on how the teaching-learning process should be developed, we succeeded in having a document that even nowadays might be used by teachers. Still, the process should start again in terms of endorsement and implementation by the Ministry of Education, as only the Specialist Commissions had it approved.
  • Development of the training process and the different types of training we delivered depended on the new Health Education curricula, as training was supposed to deliver the necessary competencies both on the content/ themes of the programme, on the process/ methodology and also to reflect the different level of development (age) of the final beneficiaries – students of all grades, starting with preschool until the 12th grade. We succeeded in developing and implementing 5 training programs (each of 40 hours of direct/ face-to-face training) certified by the Ministry of Education as part of the continuous development of the educational staff in which we involved school inspectors from all 41 district of Romania + Bucharest. Without training, no new educational program, especially one that covers such themes and goes for attitudes and behaviour change, won’t work. We knew that and we tried to involve those specific disciplines that are directly interested/ have responsibilities regarding the approached themes (pre-school, primary school, biology, educative, sports) from the whole country.
  • Since our main experience until this project involved mainly adolescents and young people from urban areas, we got aware during time on the need of addressing the rural areas as well, as primary school and secondary school is happing there for almost 50% of Romanian children. This is why we developed another intervention, for pre-school and primary-school principals from rural areas, got them to work together/ district, to understand how to better identify and address the needs from their communities through working together with other institutions and even how to develop project proposals in a logic and fact-related manner. 148 school principals from rural were involved in this learning process, becoming thus a valuable resource in also supporting health education interventions, hopefully sustainable ones.
  • Our joint vision for health education is that of universal access and high quality provided, no matter the environment/ target group. Wealth, education, social status don’t matter much when global epidemic threats occur and all people should have access to knowledge, attitudes, skills and abilities that helps them to protect (themselves and the others). Still, we were aware on the inequities and inequalities in the Romanian society and took the opportunity of this project to go for children living and learning in small rural areas, hoping also that through them, changes will occur also in their families and communities. Education is just one pillar in solving poverty-related contexts and usually after adequate housing and living infrastructure is in place. Together with the Ministry of Education and its district responsible persons Y4Y jointly accepted the challenge and supported 1787 schools to develop an integrated educational programme on health education for 67.895 pre-school and primary school pupils. New educational support materials were developed and distributed to all children involved, following both the nine themes, the principle of interactivity and experiential learning, age and level of development and understanding, capacity of teachers to work with this new instrument they were not specifically trained for and built in a child-friendly manner.

EDSANO really is our most recent huge intervention for the health education national programme. Hopefully Romania, through its high-level decision-makers will reach soon enough the maturity level to take the responsibility to really deliver universal access for high-quality health education and services. We, at Youth for Youth did and are still doing our best in supporting the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health in developing, implementing and monitoring health prevention programmes focused on adolescents and young people, being aware and contributing also to lower, respectively higher ages. As education and learning is happening throughout the life and specific public health problems occur at all ages.
